A search engine is a helper that goes and finds things for people when they do not know where to look.
Imagine somebody is thirsty and wants lemonade, but they do not know your stand exists. They do not know your name. They do not know your street.
So they ask a helper. The helper has already walked around the whole neighborhood and written down every single stand it saw. When somebody asks for lemonade, the helper looks at its notes and says: here are the three closest ones.
That helper is a search engine. It can only tell people about the stands it wrote down.
Color this: draw the helper holding its notebook. Circle the stands it can see. Cross out the one hiding behind the house.
For the grown-up holding the crayon box:
Two things happen here and children grasp them separately: discovery (the crawler has to find you) and ranking (the engine has to choose an order). A site that has never been crawled cannot rank at all, which is the version of this most adults skip straight past.
